HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR BONSAI

BONSAI

Contrary to what is often thought, a bonsai is not a dwarf or genetically modified tree, but a normal tree or shrub whose growth is controlled.

Its small size is the result of specific care over time.

By being grown in a shallow pot and pruned regularly, the growth of the roots and branches is limited, allowing it to remain small in scale.

The aim of bonsai is to represent the grandeur of nature in miniature, recreating the shape and character of a tree in its natural state.

WATERING

Bonsai should only be watered when the surface of the soil is slightly dry, avoiding both waterlogging and complete drying out.

The frequency varies depending on the species and climate, and it is essential to observe the tree's needs.

Aer should be kept moist, but not over-watered. Water evenly until the water comes out of the drainage holes, using a watering can with a fine nozzle so as not to dislodge the substrate.

Avoid using tap water directly, as it contains chlorine and limescale. Whenever possible, opt for rainwater or let the tap water stand before use.

LOCATION

The location of the bonsai depends on the species, and it can be placed outdoors or indoors.

However, no tree is naturally an indoor tree, so whenever possible you should favour the outdoors.

If kept indoors, the bonsai should be kept away from sources of intense heat or cold, such as fireplaces, heaters and air conditioning, as these conditions can affect its health.

It should be ensured that it receives enough natural light and that there is good air circulation.

Avoid frequently moving your bonsai, as the tree needs time to adapt to its environment. Choose a suitable and stable location to ensure its healthy growth.

LIGHT & TEMPERATURE

The need for sunlight varies depending on the species and bonsai should be placed outdoors in full sun or, if indoors, near a well-lit window. Artificial light is not recommended as it is no substitute for natural light.

The more sensitive species, especially those from tropical climates, should be protected from the cold in the autumn and winter months, and it is advisable to keep them in sheltered places when temperatures drop.

FERTILISATION AND MANURING

Fertilising is essential for the healthy growth of bonsai, and it is important to adapt a specific plan for each species. The frequency and type of fertiliser should be adjusted according to the tree's needs and the time of year.

Give preference to organic fertilisers, which provide nutrients in a gradual and balanced way. In addition, always follow the instructions on the packaging of each substrate and fertiliser to avoid excesses that could harm the plant.
